Phone Calls in English

Making a phone call in a foreign language is often a scary feat a language learner must accomplish.

You know it’s necessary, but you might do everything you can to avoid it! How can we make it less scary? Let’s start by learning some common phrases to help you with making phone calls in English.

Listen to the following fake phone call. We’re placing an order for pizza at “Pizza Pep Place”. Read along with us!

Hi, thank you for calling Pizza Pep Place. My name is Nicole. How can I help you?

Hi, I’d like to order a cheese pizza.

Ok. Pick up or delivery?

Pickup, please. What sizes do you have?

We have a small, medium, large, and XL.

What are their prices?

The small is 12inches and $10. The medium is 14inches and $15. The large is 16inches and $20 and the XL is 20 inches and $25

I’ll take one x large pizza, then.

Ok, do you want any toppings on that?

Yes. Extra cheese and pepperoni.

Ok, that’ll be an additional one twenty five (meaning: $1.25). Is that all?

Yes, that’s all. Thanks!

Ok, that’ll be ready for pickup in 20 minutes. Thanks. Have a safe drive.

Alright. Bye.

Now, it’s your turn! Take some time to read through the conversation. Imagine some other questions they might ask when you place an order, like:

And, may I have the name of the person coming for the pickup?

And, anything to drink?

Would you like a salad as a side?

Keep up the good work!
